De Nieuwe Meubels van de Keizer do 1Boom

1Boom (transl. 1tree) is a project in which more than 80 artists and craftsmen will make products and objects from one and the same oak tree. for more information check: www.1boom.nl

We (Michiel Kommer and Ruben van der Scheer) have made a coffee table from our portion of this oak… we made it into a challenge:

Use your wood and loose as little as possible, still… make a worthy piece.

 

So that is what we did: we divided our branch, weighed our wood and weighed many steps of the process to finally weigh our tables and thus we calculated the percentage of loss. Michiel won by far… he lost 51% along the way, Ruben lost 76%. The tables weigh 16871 and 8359 grams.

The intent of this challenge was not directly to use as much of the wood as possible (this would result in a boring piece)… but still we were persuaded to think about every step and think out new ways of using the wood in order to be efficient (especially hard with the very bad quality of wood… (we asked for a leftover piece of the tree… which was a badly bruised branch)…

An interesting journey among all the other story’s of this one tree, to be seen at the 1boom exhibitions traveling around the Netherlands, starting on October 18th 2014

Wij (Michiel en Ruben) gaan beiden een (koffie-) tafel maken van onze portie 1boom hout… en dan wel met de volgende uitdaging:

‘gebruik AL het hout dat je krijgt!, verlies zo min mogelijk hout en maak toch een waardig meubelstuk’

we zullen dit als volgt doen: voordat je begint met het bewerken van het hout weeg je het. Wanneer je klaar bent met je tafel weeg je de tafel…

vervolgens gaan we kijken wie van ons beiden (in verhouding) het minst verlies heeft gemaakt!
