Rejected work

This is a tower or totem pole. Entirely made from rejected work, old pieces that Maria van Kesteren kept in her shed for years. Not wanting to throw them away but also having no use for them anymore. I was given a box full of them to make into new work.

At first I was going to ‘re-turn’ them on the lathe. But whilst handling the pieces I found a beauty in these works that had been laying on the shelf for many years. They give a wonderful insight in Maria’s archive. They show her traces: drops of paint, little scribles, catches from the gouge and of course wood worms. They also show the great productivity that Maria has! I chose to leave the pieces as they were and use them as historic building blocks. This totem is an ode to rejected work, and of course to the endless form, circle.

Afgewezen werk

Dit is een toren, of een totem. Geheel gemaakt van onafgemaakte/afgedankte werken die Maria van Kesteren sinds jaar en dag in haar schuur heeft verzameld. Ze kon er geen afstand van doen, maar ze kon ze zelf ook niet meer gebruiken. Ik mocht een doos vol vormen uitzoeken om deze te gebruiken voor nieuw werk.

Eerst was het uitgangspunt om het hout stuk voor stuk verder ‘af te draaien’ tot nieuwe werken. Maar juist de vormen zoals ze jarenlang op de plank lagen in de schuur, spraken me aan. Ze geven ook een mooi beeld van het archief van Maria. Ze laten de sporen van Maria zien: spetters verf, een markering of een aantekening, ‘happers’ met de beitel, houtworm. Deze werken laten ook de grote productiviteit van Maria zien. Ik heb gekozen om de werken van Maria in hun oorspronkelijke vorm te laten bestaan en deze te gebruiken als historische bouwstenen. Deze totem is een ode aan afgewezen werken en natuurlijk aan de eindeloze vorm, cirkel.
